Services (available to both children and adults):

For the first several clients who contact me in January 2024, I offer a special of 50% off my regular rate for the entire Spring semester (until May 31, 2024). My services are

1. During a 15-minute free consult, you'll describe what you need and I will offer approaches to meet your needs and the rates. You'll let me know if that works for you and I'll answer your questions.

2. After the consult, the client will periodically email me their questions to be addressed. This could be photos or scans of a book describing the problems you're working on.

3. With each email, I will provide a free assessment of the set of questions, which will include the following: (1) How many different "topics" requiring separate appointments are needed to address all the questions (see pay scale below, typically one topic per assignment per class), (2) How much time I will need to prepare for each appointment (charged on the same scale), and (3) For advanced questions, how confident I am that I already know each solution.

For all questions, I will aim to "teach students to fish" rather than "give students a fish," with reference to the famous aphorism whereby the latter feeds you for a day, whereas the former feeds you for a lifetime. I use the Socratic method to help students solve problems on their own.

For advanced questions, if I know the general approach, we can work through it together, which could be helpful on its own, or you can pay me in advance to think through the steps and provide more polished tutoring.

If how to solve a problem isn't readily apparent, in the free assessment, I may provide a written brainstorm of different approaches that might help get you started (if I can generate such a brainstorm easily). You can then decide if you want me to explore any approaches on my own (for pay) or in a Zoom session with you, (also for a fee).

After the free assessment, the client will schedule any appointments and arrange for payment in advance using an online service such as PayPal or Venmo.

The rates with the special: $60 US for the first 30 minutes (30-minute minimum, tutoring or preparation). $1 US for each additional minute needed (for the same "topic," same or different appointment.)

The rate without the special is $120 US for 30 minutes and $2 US for each additional minute.

I am passionate about mentoring sports and other data science projects. One unique value of my business is in preparing students for careers in sports data analytics. Regardless of what excites you, be it sports, or something else, I can mentor and help you design and implement data projects that will get you noticed by employers and university admission committees. That said, even if you are not pursuing a career in sports, sports data projects can often be good conversation openers in interviews and with professional networking. Baseball, in particular, has an enormous wealth of free data available. If sports projects aren't your thing, but you are interested in data, good data are available for topics that many other students, universities, and employers have a keen interest in, such as film, entertainment, and social trends.

I am available 11:30 AM - 4:30 PM Eastern Time, Saturdays and Sundays, and for occasional 30-minute appointments on weekday evenings. Zoom or email correspondence only.

About me: I have a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University.

I have taught at the college level (8+ years) at Cornell, Johns Hopkins University, and American University. While at American University, I taught 24 classes in Statistics over 6 years. I have also taught Calculus, Mathematics, Engineering, and Neuroscience classes. I have explained the concepts of Basic Statistics to over 1000 students, and know how to convey understanding. In Statistics classes, I often assigned optional or required data projects and helped students find topics and data that inspired them. My students went on to good jobs in industry or government. With my letters of recommendation, some went on to Medical School; others to Law School. At American University, I led a research program in Baseball Analytics for several years and worked with students on Baseball Analytics projects. I had success advancing students to jobs in Sports Analytics. I am currently a Data Scientist working in the healthcare Industry.

I can work with parents, or directly with children or adult students.
